Green seed extract of Tectona grandis as corrosion inhibitor for mild steel in acid medium

Abstract


The corrosion inhibition of mild steel in hydrochloric acid medium by the acid extract of the seeds of Tectona grandis had been studied in relation to the concentration and temperature. Thermodynamic parameters such as energy of activation for corrosion of mild steel (E) and heat of adsorption of the inhibitors on the metal surface (Q) were calculated from weight loss data.  Electrochemical parameters were evaluated from AC impedance and Tafel polarization studies in the presence and absence of different concentrations of inhibitor. Adsorption isotherm reveals the monolayer adsorption of the inhibitor on the metal surface. SEM photographs were recorded to confirm the protective nature of the inhibitor. The entire study revealed the high potential of natural acid extract of the seeds of T. grandis as non-toxic, cost-effective corrosion inhibitor for mild steel in acid medium.
