Corrosion inhibition of mild steel in hydrochloric acid solution by the leaf extract of Nicotiana tabacum

Abstract


The corrosion inhibiting effect of the leaf extract of Nicotiana tabacum (NT) on mild steel in 0.1 M HCl was investigated by weight loss and electrochemical techniques. The results reveal that NT inhibited the corrosion reaction And the inhibition efficiency increased with increasing concentration of NT but decreased with prolonged exposure time. Polarization data show that the extract behaved mostly as a mixed-type inhibitor. Impedance results revealed adsorption of organic species, possibly from the extract, on the metal / solution interface. UV/visible spectrophotometry and gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy analyses confirmed and identified the presence of organic species in the extract, which should be responsible for the corrosion inhibiting effect.  The adsorption of the extract was approximated to the Langmuir adsorption isotherm.
